Organic Food: Does It Matter?

By Anthony Kalliopi

A lot of people don't understand the point of organic food. It doesn't have extra vitamins or minerals, it doesn't have special life-extending properties. So why eat it - why spend extra money on organic food if these statements aren't true?

Organic food works to prevent toxic elements from getting into your body. The benefits of this are obvious, but a few of the biggest problems of consuming toxins are way more autoimmune disorders such as arthritis, eczema, and diabetes, to name a few.

Our livers - our main detox organs - are now overworked from the huge amounts of toxins we put in not only from our food, but also from the air we breathe and the clothes we wear.

Many now think that because your liver is so busy dealing with this huge toxic load, it can't do one of its main jobs, which is to burn fat. The idea is that this is could partly be responsible for the massive increase in obesity. If the liver is too busy removing toxins from your system, then it has no time to help your body burn fat for energy.

The problem with the herbicides, pesticides, preservatives, artificial colors and other chemicals going into our foods is this: they may not be toxic on their own, but when all combined to create our processed foods, then hit with high-heat or radiation to kill bacteria growth, completely new chemicals are formed through the chemical reactions. These new chemicals are not identified or tested for toxicity. So we're literally poisoning ourselves, causing all of these diseases and health problems for ourselves.

When you stop putting so many bad things into your body, something amazing can happen. Your body can stop being on high-alert all the time, constantly trying to bail water out of a quickly sinking ship.

So in the end, the choice is up to you. But yes, I'd say organic food matters. It makes a difference in your health, and it makes a difference in your life. It's true that switching to organic foods won't instantly make you look like Ryan Gosling or Emma Stone, but it lets your body not worry so much about keeping up with the huge burden of constantly removing toxins, and instead focus on giving you better overall health.
